Wonders Of Mohs Surgery

Skin cancer is one of the most threatening illnesses of mankind. It’s insidious. Sneaks up on you when least expected. And can develop into potentially fatal complications.

Fortunately, there’s a way to stop it. It’s called Mohs Surgery, after Doctor Frederic Edward Mohs who, as a research assistant in 1939 developed the foundation of a process of surgically removing 100% of a skin tumor while sparing the most possible tissue, thus avoiding overly aggressive surgery and producing a much better cosmetic result than procedures used previously.

And it works quickly. The following four unretouched photos below show the healing progression from 48 hours after surgery, when the first bandage comes off, after one week when the stitches come out, then only two days later (wonderfully quick healing) and finally after two weeks.

At first the treatment met with some serious opposition by some of the medical community. Dr. Mohs and others persisted. In time the process evolved from the original chemosurgery process that used a zinc chloride paste and took at least several days for the surgery to be completed to today’s micrographic surgery where a skin cancer can be completely removed during one session.

The following unretouched photo shows the results after 3-4 months.

Mohs microsurgery is now the treatment of choice for select basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas as well as for other less common skin cancers.

These photos, all model released, along with other cancer treatment images are available as stock images for use in publications, on line and advertsing.  Here's the link.

A very special bird in Lanark Co. in late January.  Fox Sparrow - he's been hanging around, eating the Tree Sparrows' lunch,
since mid-December.
